PAYING IT FORWARD
RYA asks Maurice Broaddus "What advice do you have for writers just beginning in their career?"
Always aim for the top markets in the industry. Being published in the higher paying markets leads to true visibility/exposure and solid building blocks for your career. That said, that path is paved with rejection. There are a couple things you can do to mitigate this process:
LEARN. Learning can take a variety of forms. Publishing is an ever-shifting landscape, it’s paradigms and algorithms always in flux. So, if you are not in a mode of constant learning, you will quickly go the way of the dinosaur. So study the markets. Buy/subscribe to the magazines. Be constantly reading, understanding the vibe of the moment. Discerning what individual editors tastes are. That way you can better target/tailor your story to those editors.
IMPROVE. Failure pushes me, but I know that I’m going to succeed (this is my mindset even though I have to remind myself of this fact every so often, especially after a rejection). Editors aren’t the enemy. We want the same things: the best story possible. If you are aiming for the best markets, you need to be writing the best stories. Maybe your work isn’t there yet. That’s fine, none of us started publish-ready. Keep pushing yourself, keep experimenting, keep digging into what your unique voice is.
Be relentless. Show and prove. Be you.
