Coming this Saturday is a workshop I requested special from Carrie Callahan called Divining Story: Using Tarot for Storyboarding. I've seen Carrie use this trick personally and thought it was a brilliant way to construct a plot.

Holly Walrath teaches Character-Based Worldbuilding on May 15th. Are you someone who doesn't adhere to tried-and-true methodology? Let Holly show you how to tap into your spontaneity to build dynamic, sensible worlds.

CHARACTER-BASED WORLDBUILDING
$40.00
When it comes to worldbuilding, many methods require writers to conduct extensive research to learn about the world they are creating. While creating lists and building a Wiki can be helpful in preparing to write, it can also hinder creativity for writers who prefer a more spontaneous approach.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS: EVERY WORD, A STORY
$40.00
In this workshop, we will examine the value of every word to its sentence and every sentence to the ultimate tone, mood, and power of a piece of short fiction.
Some of the topics that will be covered:
- General guidelines for writing concise, powerful prose with examples of how these rules generally improve clarity and give more opportunity for gripping prose.
- Avoiding continuous tense, adverbs, putting subjects beside their verbs, etc.
- Moreover, we will discuss why these are general guidelines so that we know when to follow or eschew them, based on voice, style, or functionality reasons.
- We will practice ways to execute beautiful, evocative prose without going purple.
- A focus on verbs and understanding why and how they are the most powerful words in any sentence and therefore must be chosen carefully.
This workshop is about helping writers view stories on the level of individual words—to understand that stories begin with the word, not the sentence.
