Hello! I am glad you found your way to our little corner of the internet! Welcome to Reach Your Apex! Since our website is new, I thought a short guide of what we have to offer was in store.
What Is Reach Your Apex?
The big question, right? What’s this all about?
For years and years, I’ve taught writing workshops at our local center for literacy. Time and again, students would relate to me their frustration at the lack of online options. When I pointed out the dozens and dozens of writing courses and programs, their response was always the same.
Have you seen how expensive those are?
You know what? On the whole, most workshops are prohibitively expensive for lower and middle income writers who are looking to improve their craft. Many of them are multi-session deep dives that also will take a large chunk of your available time.
If you have the money and the time, those are wonderful opportunities. But what about the writer with a day job who can only dedicate a few hours a week to creative endeavors?
These folks are who we hope to help. Most of our offerings are one-shot and inexpensive. Our workshop leaders are writing, editing, or publishing professionals who are not only knowledgeable about the subjects they’re teaching, but are also attentive and kind and encouraging.
Certainly, our classes and services will be helpful to anyone hoping for self-enrichment and to improve their writing. Everyone is welcome here!
As part of our commitment to making our courses available to everyone, we provide at least two free seats to students who are dealing with financial hardship for every course.
What is offered at launch?
Our launch offerings can be broken into three sections:
- Live Workshops/Webinars/Classes
These are, as the name would suggest, live instruction by our workshop leader to a group of students via Zoom. When you buy your seat, you’ll receive an email that contains a secret link to your Zoom session.
After the class is over, you’ll receive a link to download a video of the session, any supplementary materials from the workshop leader, and a link to a survey. - Offline Learning
These are video archives of our live workshops. Not every workshop will be available for offline purchase, but when they are, they’ll be downloaded as an MP4 and priced a bit less than the cost of the live workshop. - Services
Students will be able to buy editorial services from some of our workshop leaders. While Reach Your Apex sets the prices for live workshops and offline learning videos, our instructors determine the price for their services.
Free Writing Essays
We like to give back to creators. One way we will accomplish this is via our FOR WRITERS series of essays. We currently have a small archive of essays already available that cover such topics as writing an evergreen bio, the thought processes of a slush reader, and how to write in those tiny fragments of time we have.
Beginning in early September, we will publish new original essays in the series (the first is by Marie Vibbert).
Snap Judgement
Snap Judgement is a YouTube series run by our sister company Apex Magazine and sponsored by Reach Your Apex. In these live-stream events, a panel of editors are read the first 250 words of a story and provides in-the-moment feedback about that opening. The panel typically includes Lesley Conner (Apex Magazine editor-in-chief), a second member from the zine’s editorial team, and a guest editor. Guest editors have included Nick Mamatas, Wendy Wagner, Arley Sorg, and more.
Our next Snap Judgement live-stream is scheduled for mid-October.
